I was confirming that the mail in the spam folder was in fact SPAM when I hit the empty key and deleted the entire folder

After messages are emptied from Trash, they're permanently deleted from the Yahoo! Mail server and can't be recovered.
you can look in trash folder
not there it is gone
hope they are there
